The Emergence of the Salt Trade

There is evidence of some small scale salt production in Sunderland during the later middle ages. However, it was not until the latter part of the 16th century that the trade began to expand as a result of the enterprise of Robert Bowes of Barnes, a member of a leading landholding family, who set up ten salt pans with the intention of making Sunderland a major salt manufacturing centre.
