Coalite

In 1936 a plant to produce smokeless fuel ('Coalite') was built near Bolsover colliery. This was joined shortly afterwards by another making various byproducts. The works remained in use, in the face of increasing opposition from those concerned at its impact on the environment, until 2004. The Coalite Group considerably diversified. In the mid 1980s it owned business ranging from the Falkland Islands Company to motor vehicle dealers.
