Coal trade after c. 1720

The coal trade was at the centre of Sunderland's economy throughout the 18th and 19th century. Its impact on all aspects of life, including of course the landscape and environment, was enormous.
An account of the earlier coal trade can be found on the site of our sister project, Sunderland and its Origins.
