Chitterne Brook

Chitterne brook runs into the river Wylye. Codford owes its origins to the fords which crossed at this point. On both sides of the Chitterne brook the terrain is relatively flat. Strips of alluvium and river gravel have accumulted alongside the brook, but Codford's bedrock is chalk.
The brook separates the two Codford parishes, with St Peter and St Mary lying west and east respectively. It was the subject of an adjudication in 1582 after a dispute between two tenants. Thereafter the respective tenants had the right to the green banks, green ground and land liable to flooding on their own side of the brook.
