Building with Stone

Coursed and squared rubble (Swan Lane)

In Burford, how stone is used can reflect the status of a building and the owner's needs. Dry-stone walled structures were the cheapest to build, while dressed ashlar blocks were more likely to be used for better quality homes. Keying marks and flecks of coloured lime show that the cruder stones in many buildings were covered in render and limewash.
