Avonmouth Dispute of 1962

In 1962, Avonmouth Dockers refused to work with any 'coloured' labour resulting in the dismissal of some 60 'coloured workers.' These mainly West Indian men had been part of a contingent of 200 registered unemployed workers directed by the Bristol Labour Exchange to help unload a cargo of bananas off the ss Tilapa. One of them Roy Alexander Wright, a Jamaican immigrant, was said to have assaulted his white foreman, Reginald William Bell preciptating, a 'general melee between white and coloured workers'.
