Elizabeth Luttrell's memorial

Elizabeth was a Courtenay, like the Elizabeth Luttrell who over a century earlier purchased Dunster and the Mohun estates in Somerset. The Elizabeth commemorated in this incised slab of Watchet alabaster was the wife of James Luttrell who died of wounds received at the battle of Wakefield in 1460. He was attainted in 1461 and the Herberts were given his estates. However Elizabeth successfully recovered her interests in the Luttrell estates after her second husband, the equally unfortunate Humphrey Audley, was beheaded at Tewkesbury. She married a third husband Thomas Malet of Enmore and died in 1493 having seen her son High Luttrell successfully recover his father's lands.
